About

Rufino Tamayo was a Mexican painter and printmaker, who gained much recognition for his large-scale murals using vivd and concentrated colors, helped bring well deserved attention to Mexican Art. After his dissatisfaction with that art program at the School of Fine Arts in Mexico City, as a young adult, Tamayo went on to study independently and be self taught; in that time he was heavily influenced by artists like Picasso, Braque and Matisse. As to rebel from the formal approach that had been dominating the country's art production since the Mexican Revolution, Tamayo combined modern European painting styles with traditional Mexican folk themes, giving him a style that was a mix between figurative abstraction and surrealism. When speaking about his art, Tamayo stated," Art is a means of expression that must be understood by everybody, everywhere. It grows out of the earth, the textures of our lives, and our experience."
