Picasso's Vibrant Clown | Hand Signed Lithograph from 1968
The image for this lithograph after Pablo Picasso's Le Clown of 1968 originally appeared on the cover of the French publication Le Patriote, February 24-March 1st, 1968, Le Carnaval de Picasso. Picasso's selection of the clown, a comedic and sometimes tragic character, represented his later egos to explore the human condition. At 86 years old, his sense of play and spontaneity was still on full display. The composition, characterized by bold, rhythmic lines and an exuberant use of color perfectly captures his "Late Period" style that defined newfound freedom of movement and abandonment of societal constraints. After the Clown depiction gained notoriety, it was reproduced as a poster to advertise an upcoming Picasso exhibition and ultimately elevated to fine art as a limited edition lithograph after Picasso's original wax chalk drawing executed earlier that year.
Printed on Arches vellum by the master, Henri Deschamps in the workshop of Atelier Mourlot, Paris, this "Clown" has the pedigree of royalty rather than jester.
