Patrick Nagel (1945 - 1984) was an American artist and illustrator best known for his imagery of beautiful women in a distinctive style derived from art deco and pop art. Nagel's popularity grew with his illustrations for Architectural Digest, Playboy, the cover artwork for Duran Duran's album, Rio (acclaimed as one of the top album covers of all time), and countless commissioned advertisement posters. Nagel's women were iconic and shaped the trends and style of the late 1970's and 1980's.
His original paintings, serigraphs, and posters are on permanent display in the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, and the Musee de L'Affiche, in Paris.
This serigraph, Silver Sunbeam, was the ninth Patrick Nagel limited edition print published by Mirage Editions. One of only 250 signed and numbered pieces printed on 100% archival rag paper and released in 1979 to advertise the opening of The Silver Sunbeam Gallery’s Albuquerque branch. This print also is recognized as the first Nagel print with the figure extending beyond the interior frame and into the poster’s border, a style that would become synonymous with Nagel artwork. This limited edition is the only known printing of the image. No posters or canvas prints were produced.
