Patrick Nagel (1945 - 1984) was an American artist and illustrator best known for his imagery of beautiful women in a distinctive style derived from art deco and pop art. Nagel's popularity grew with his illustrations for Architectural Digest, Playboy, the cover artwork for Duran Duran's album, Rio (acclaimed as one of the top album covers of all time), and countless commissioned advertisement posters. Nagel's women were iconic and shaped the trends and style of the late 1970's and 1980's.
His original paintings, serigraphs, and posters are on permanent display in the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, and the Musee de L'Affiche, in Paris.
"Piedmont Graphics" is another example of a commissioned advertisement by Patrick Nagel converted to fine art for the collector. Released in 1982 by Mirage Editions, this hand signed limited edition serigraph was limited to just 250 copies, printed on 100% archival rag paper by Wasserman Silkscreen.
The image features a front facing portrait of a woman in the iconic Nagel style, framed in a geometric shape and crossed by nearly intersection lines across the image and background. This composition became the blueprint for 1980’s graphic design stylization.
