About

Hailing from one of the world's most remote regions these are traditional accessories, also known as bilas, from the Abelam tribe in Papua New Guinea. The first is a Karahut (c. 1970-90), when worn as a mouthguard it was a sign of war, meant to frighten away enemies, yet it could also be worn as a necklace to signify peace in ceremonies. The second item is a headdress (c. 1970-90) that would commonly accompany the Karahut in ceremonial dances.  The duality of uses for these pieces is a testament to the shifting relations between the local tribes.
