Bouteille, Verre et Cartes: A Masterclass in Synthetic Cubism

This vibrant plate, "Bouteille, Verre et Cartes" (Bottle, Glass, and Cards), is a standout color study from the 1962 Un Éventail portfolio. It represents a masterful pochoir after Picasso’s still life composition and Synthetic Cubist period, where he transformed the mundane objects of a Parisian café: a wine bottle, a stemmed glass, and playing cards, into a complex architectural harmony of color and texture.

The technical execution by the Daniel Jacomet studio is particularly remarkable in this piece. To recreate the appearance of a "pasted paper"  collage, the studio utilized the pochoir process to apply rich, opaque pigments that mimic the physical layers of an original work. The saturated colors, and faux textures are rendered with such precision on heavy Arches paper that the viewer can almost sense the disparate materials of the original 1910s composition, including the simulated paper discoloration. Limited to an edition of 260, this work is highly sought after for its ability to capture the intellectual playfulness and revolutionary spirit of Picasso’s most influential stylistic era.
