1945 Henri Matisse Original Lithograph | Verve Vol IV No 13: Color
This original lithograph served as the frontispiece for the landmark 1945 edition of La Revue Verve (Vol. IV, No. 13): De la Couleur (Color) which was dedicated to the revolutionary color theory of the legendary Henri Matisse. Beyond it's vibrant color pallet's boldly optimistic counter to the immediately preceding World War II years, this collection represents a pivotal moment in art history, the first appearance of Henri Matisse's paper cut-out style.
Beyond the visually daring brilliance of these originals, this release was historically significant as the direct precursor to Matisse's legendary Book, Jazz, which would later be featured in La Revue Verve in 1947 and go on to set the standards for the definition of original works, limited editions, "afters," and print artwork. Tériade would later feature this style again in another special Verve seres honoring the great artist, The Last Works of Henri Matisse.
This print, like it's subsequent equals is a wholly original work of art by the master of modernism, commissioned for the issue, executed by the artist, and printed by another master, Fernand Mourlot. The soul of the work lies in the precision executed by the collaborators and the influence of Tériade that ensured the brightness and intensity of the inks that perfectly present Matisse's original vision. This piece presents the opportunity for a collector to obtain a rare first in both the oeuvre of Matisse but also of the lithographic medium as a verified original piece of art.
