Mark Ryden is an American painter who is viewed to be part of the Lowbrow art movement. He was once dubbed "the god-father of pop surrealism" by means of Interview magazine.
Blending topics of pop lifestyle with methods reminiscent of the historic masters, Mark Ryden has created a singular style that blurs the standard boundaries between high and low art. His work first garnered interest in the 1990s when he ushered in a new style of painting, “Pop Surrealism”, dragging a host of followers in his wake. Ryden has trumped the preliminary surrealist techniques by using subject matter loaded with cultural connotations.
