Le Buffet, 1928: A rare Henri Matisse Pochoir from XXe Siécle

This exquisite, hand-embellished lithograph with pochoir, was initially included in a suite of four that was featured in the 1929 Chroniques du Jour "XXe Siécle" series devoted to Henri Matisse. Featuring Matisse's familiar still-life subject is titled simply, "Le Buffet, 1928" (The Buffet) and was executed in his unmistakable fauvist style. The vibrant, unnatural color and bold brushwork simplify the model while portraying intense background patterns and objects to evoke a sense of ease.

The technical precision of this pochoir was accoplished by the legendary printer, Jean Saudé who, as only few other printers of his generation, masterfully details the nuances of Matisse's simplicity while faithfully producing the bold colors and tonal depth of the original. Between the Artist's vision and the Printer's prescision, this rare Henri Matisse pochoir and collaboration between two masters of their trades resulted in a tactile, painterly quality that is highly prized by collectors of authentic Matisse artwork.
