C.J. Graham — the man discovered in a restaurant and turned into a legend

C.J. Graham was not a professional actor when he landed the role of Jason Voorhees. A U.S. Army veteran standing 6'3" and weighing 250 pounds, Graham was working as a nightclub owner when he was performing as Jason in a stage hypnosis show at a restaurant — part of a magician's act where audience members were placed in simulated encounters with the infamous killer. The film's special effects coordinator happened to be in the audience that night and was immediately struck by Graham's commanding physical presence and menacing stillness. When the originally cast actor was found to be lacking, Graham was cast and went on to deliver what many fans consider the most physically imposing and visually iconic portrayal of Jason in the entire franchise.

Why Part VI matters — the film that made Jason immortal

Jason Lives is the installment that fundamentally changed the character of Jason Voorhees forever. Prior to Part VI, Jason was depicted as a mortal killer — dangerous, brutal, but human. Director Tom McLoughlin deliberately reimagined him as a supernatural, nearly indestructible force, resurrected from the dead by lightning and reborn as something closer to a Universal Monsters creature than a slasher villain. Every Jason film that followed took this supernatural interpretation as its baseline. C.J. Graham's towering, relentless, utterly silent portrayal is the template. The film also introduced the James Bond-style gun barrel opening — with Jason's eye replacing 007's — and featured the Alice Cooper track "He's Back (The Man Behind the Mask)," written specifically for the film and featuring Graham himself in the music video.

Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives was released on August 1, 1986, directed by Tom McLoughlin. It grossed $19.4 million against a modest budget and has grown substantially in reputation over the decades — regularly cited by horror fans and critics as the best film in the Friday the 13th franchise. Graham reprised his role as Jason in Alice Cooper's "He's Back" music video, and has remained a beloved figure in the horror convention circuit ever since.
