About

Rare copy of Hoyle's Games Improved from Edmond Hoyle printed in 1796. Hoyle was a British writer who largely wrote about the rules of card games and is considered
the first technical or scientific writer of this subject. Hoyle’s works begot the saying “according to Hoyle”, meaning strict adherence to the rules. Hoyle wrote extensively about the laws of the games of whist, backgammon, and chess. Many of his
backgammon rules and strategies are still widely in use.

Hoyle’s Games Improved was first published in 1742, it included practical approaches and strategies to games including whist, chess, backgammon, quadrille, piquet and more. This is the 1796 edition by James Beaufort, and it is considered the very first American book on the subject of card games.
