A fantastic specimen from prehistoric North America this is a fossilized skull from Archaeotherium Mortoni, often called the “hell pig,” a large, hoofed mammal that roamed North America roughly 35 to 28 million years ago. The skull is largely original and includes a stand for display. It was found in Shannon County, South Dakota.
A member of the extinct family Entelodontidae, the hell pig looked something like an giant warthog with some even reaching the size of a buffalo! They had a long, heavy skull, powerful jaws, and distinctive bony flanges jutting from its cheeks and lower jaw. Despite the nickname, it wasn’t a true pig. Many researchers place entelodonts closer to the ancestors of hippos and whales. Archaeotherium was an opportunistic omnivore with teeth suited to crushing bones, roots, and plant matter alike, and fossil evidence suggests it hunted or scavenged early camels such as Poebrotherium. Its fossils are found in the White River badlands of South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming. The species name honors the 19th-century naturalist Samuel George Morton, and it was first described by paleontologist Joseph Leidy in 1850.
