About

André Masson (1896–1974) was a pioneering French Surrealist painter who transformed childhood observations of nature into dreamlike compositions. A World War I veteran, Masson became instrumental in developing Surrealism's core techniques—biomorphic abstraction and automatic drawing—to visualize the subconscious mind. His work explores primal themes of desire, metamorphosis, and psychological depth through writhing forms and mythological imagery, establishing him as one of the movement's most influential early practitioners.
