A complete set of four 1948 Royal Maundy coins penny, twopence, threepence, and fourpence struck in .925 silver by the Royal Mint and presented in a display case. The coins bear the portrait of King George VI on the obverse the quietly stoic king who led Britain through the Second World War and refused to leave London during the Blitz with the classic crowned numeral design surrounded by an oak wreath on the reverse, a motif unchanged since 1822. The 1948 Maundy ceremony was held at Westminster Abbey, one of only a handful of years in which George VI personally distributed the purses to recipients, continuing the tradition restarted by his father George V in 1932 after a gap of over 200 years. In most years, fewer than 2,000 complete Maundy sets are issued struck not for commerce but purely for ceremony.
1948 was a year of quiet but profound historical significance for Britain and its monarchy. The country was rebuilding from the most devastating war in its history, rationing remained in force, and George VI — whose health was already in decline — formally relinquished the title Emperor of India as Indian independence reshaped the nature of the British Crown. The London Olympics, the first since 1936, were held that same summer at a battered Wembley Stadium. Against that backdrop, the continuation of the Maundy ceremony — an unbroken thread of royal tradition stretching back to the 13th century — carried a particular resonance. This set, sealed in its display case, is a small but tangible piece of that moment in British history.
