Laura Woodward 1834 - 1926

Woodward began her art career in her native New York where she painted familiar landscapes of the American North East.  While working as a professional painter in New York City, her pieces gained acclaim and respect from colleagues of the Hudson River and White Mountain Schools of art.  She exhibited at the American Art Gallery, National Academy of Design, Boston Art Club, Brooklyn Art Association, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, and several other venues including numerous Midwest and southern expositions.

By the 1880s Woodward began to spend winters in St. Augustine, Florida but soon found it unfulfilling as a tropical inspiration.  She began to explore different parts of Florida to find subjects in the immense variety of exotic plants and flowers.  Palm Beach quickly became her focus despite its remote and difficult to reach location.  Woodward began to explore the nature and paint the jungle and swampland landscapes inhabited with bears, panthers, alligators, and wildlife not seen elsewhere in Florida.

Her watercolors, specifically of the Royal Poinciana tree and it’s blossoms, became advertising for the settlement of Florida.  The media determined she should be “adopted by the entire state” of Florida due to the way she publicized its natural beauties to the entire nation.

In 1940 the Palm Beach Art League held Woodward's memorial exhibition and helped found the Norton Gallery and School of Art, dedicated in 1941 (Norton Museum of Art). Laura Woodward was inducted into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame in 2013.

Laura Woodward is remembered as Florida's most important nineteenth-century woman artist, one of its greatest publicists, and integral to the development of Palm Beach County.
