Dalí's Orginal Aquatint Etching, Envy, from Les Huit Péchés Capitaux

Envy, from Salvador Dalí's Eight Deadly Sins is more than a typical depiction of one of the Catholic Church's seven mortal vices. It transcends traditional visual commentary on humanity's most internal vice and elevates jealousy to a haunting surrealist creature, consumed by its own gaze. Through Dalí's expert use of the sugar-lift aquatint technique the creature appears to be amorphic and suggests a soul that has become hollowed by desire for that which it doesn not posess.

Printed on Rives paper as one of eight in a limited edition of 125 suites, Eight Deadly Sins, or Les Huit Péchés Capitaux, serves as a profound meditation on the human condition and the pervasive influence of the Catholic Church on one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Prints from the cancelled plates are in the permanent collection of the Salvador Dalí museum in St. Petersburg, Fl.
