About

Henri Laurens was born on February 18, 1885, in Paris, France. He was a French artist best known for his Cubist collages, figures of nudes, and busts. The curving shapes and disentangled highlights of his oeuvre are reminiscent of antiquated Cycladic figures, though he also drew influence from his companionships with modern craftsmen Georges Braque, Amedeo Modigliani, Juan Gris, and Pablo Picasso. From 1914–1915 and expanding until after the first World War, Laurens experimented with still lifes and different unused media, utilizing wood and press and inevitably graduating to terracotta and bronze. He then went on to take an interest in the Venice Biennales of 1948 and 1950 and had a review at the Musée National d'Art Moderne in Paris in 1951. Nowadays, his works are within the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Gallery of Modern Art in New York, the Tate Exhibition in London, and the Los Angeles Province Historical center of Craftsmanship, among others.
