André Masson (1896–1974) was a pioneering French Surrealist painter who transformed childhood observations of nature into haunting dreamscapes. A WWI veteran and early adopter of André Breton's Surrealist manifesto, Masson mastered automatic drawing and biomorphic abstraction to visualize the subconscious. His work explores primal themes—sexuality, violence, metamorphosis, and death—through writhing mythological forms and distorted natural imagery, revealing the turbulent landscape of human desire and the mind's hidden depths.
