About

In September 1939, anticipating the German invasion, Picasso left his Paris studio for the coastal town of Royan. As German forces advanced and Paris endured relentless bombings and occupation, Picasso’s art evolved, focusing on simplifying and abstracting identity while conveying his lived experiences.

His notebooks from this era feature a wide range of subjects including portraits, figures, skulls, bullfights, and stark war imagery. Labeled as a degenerate by the Gestapo and barred from public exhibition, Picasso devoted himself to private studio work.

After the war, he embarked on intensive printmaking, producing limited editions of his studio work and notebook studies.

“Carnet de Dessins de Picasso” reproduces 44 images from a notebook created between May 30, 1940, and August 22, 1940, with final entries dated February 19, 1942—spanning pre-invasion, the siege of Paris, and occupation. Published in 1948 by Cahiers d’Art, this edition was limited to 1,200 copies.
