The Carol Burnett Show — the gold standard of television comedy
Airing on CBS from 1967 to 1978 for 11 seasons and 279 episodes, The Carol Burnett Show won 25 Emmy Awards across its run — more than any variety series in television history at the time — and produced some of the most beloved comedy sketches ever committed to tape. Carol Burnett herself is a Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient, a Kennedy Center Honoree, and the namesake of the Carol Burnett Award — a special honorary Emmy recognizing outstanding contributions to television. Vicki Lawrence, whose portrayal of Mama became iconic enough to launch its own spin-off series (Mama's Family), won the Emmy for Outstanding Performance in a Variety or Music Program in 1976. Harvey Korman won four Emmy Awards for his work on the series. Tim Conway won three Emmy Awards, with his legendary improvised "Dentist" sketch — which left Harvey Korman physically unable to continue the scene — considered one of the single greatest moments in the history of television comedy.
