Dreamy and Anxious Woman in the Sculpture Studio. Plate 75 from the Vollard Suite

Created in 1933 as part of the "Sculptor’s Studio" series within the famous Vollard Suite, this etching offers an intimate glimpse into the complex psychological dialogue between Picasso and his model, muse, and secret lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter. In this scene, the boundaries between the living model, the artist, and the artwork are fluid, reflecting the suite's overarching obsession with the Pygmalion myth where a sculptor's creation, Galatea, comes to life. The title, "Dreamy and Anxious Woman," captures the subtle tension often present in these studio images; while the setting appears classically serene, the model’s expression suggests an internal disquiet, perhaps hinting at the complicated reality of her hidden life with the artist or the overwhelming nature of being the subject of his intense scrutiny.

Physically, this impression represents the definitive quality of the Vollard Suite’s production. Printed on Montval laid paper with both the "Picasso" and “Galatea" watermarks, it belongs to the standard edition of 260 produced by master printer Roger Lacourière in 1939. The presence of the "Picasso" watermark (as opposed to the "Vollard" watermark seen on other sheets in the same edition) is a specific characteristic of the paper distribution for this run. Furthermore, the fact that it is signed but unnumbered is historically consistent for this suite; unlike modern print runs, the Vollard edition of 260 was not numbered by the artist. A pencil signature on an unnumbered sheet of this specific watermarked paper constitutes a highly desirable, authentic state for a collector.
