Inside the Villa: Picasso’s Vision in the Studio in Carnet de la Californie

Following Henri Matisse's passing, Picasso channeled his, and the art world’s loss, into a compelling series of Odalisque compositions as homage to his friend and rival. Jacqueline Roque, his second wife and artistic muse and model, became central to this body of work created within their shared sanctuary at Villa La Californie in Cannes, where the couple resided from 1955 to 1961. Recognizing the significance of this prolific period, Picasso compiled preliminary sketches executed between November 1955 and January 1956 into the exclusive portfolio "Carnet de la Californie," preserving the genesis of masterworks conceived during this transformative chapter of his artistic practice.
