Toros y Toreros | 1961, Cercle d'Art, Paris

In 1961, Pablo Picasso in collaboration with the French publisher Cercle d’Art produced perhaps his most patriotic, well known, and nostalgic work, Toros y Toreros (Bulls and Bullfighters).

This collection comprises three sketchbooks created between 1957 and 1959.  They depict the painter’s love of Spanish culture, customs, traditional attire, all of which were imagery reminiscent of his childhood works and the national pastime of bullfighting.

The collection opens with a foreword on the theme written by renowned bullfighter and Picasso’s personal friend, Luis Miguel Dominguin, alongside an art analysis by critic Georges Boudaille. The extremely rare deluxe edition features 16 untitled, full-color, single sided original lithographs, expertly created under Picasso’s direction by Mourlot of Paris, whereas the bound edition features fine art offset lithographs from Imprimerie Moderne du Lion, a prestigious Parisian print house renowned for its work in high-quality color lithography and art publishing that played a significant role in producing some of the most important art publications of the 20th-century. The full-page color images were complemented by 16 black-and-white plates, of the same size, after washes and sketches contained in the artist's original sketchbooks.

All Toros y Toreros works offered are original 1961 French first-editions
