This rare Picasso etching with aquatint, "Peintre et son modele" was created by Picasso's own hand in 1963 to be included in only the first 75 portfolios of "Les blues de Barcelona" out of a total of 500. Original works by Picasso available to private collectors are becoming increasingly rare and more valuable as time passes since his death.
The portfolio and this piece were originally sold to commemorate the opening of the Picasso museum in Barcelona, Spain that same year. Both the portfolio and the museum highlight Picasso's most formative years.
Picasso's family moved from Malaga to Barcelona in 1895. For the next nine years, he resided in the old quarter of the city, surrounded by a vibrant intellectual atmosphere and a landscape of social and ideological struggles. It was during this time that he utilized his academic training while developing his unique style and character. Picasso formed meaningful relationships with fellow artists and friends, solidifying his connection to the city for the rest of his life.
