Nature Morte à la Pipe: A Cubist Study in Texture and Form

This striking work, "Nature Morte à la Pipe" (Still Life with Pipe), is a premier plate from the 1962 portfolio Un Éventail, published by Éditions d’Art. It represents a sophisticated "after" work, where Pablo Picasso revisits his foundational Cubist period through the lens of a masterful charcoal sketch. The composition deconstructs the pipe and tabletop into a rhythmic series of geometric planes and tonal layers, showcasing Picasso’s revolutionary approach to perspective.

The technical execution of this piece is exceptional, utilizing a combination of lithography for the foundational structure and pochoir (hand-stencil) for the rich, charcoal-like textures. Masterfully rendered by Daniel Jacomet, the pochoir process captures the tactile, smoky depth of the original charcoal with such fidelity that the grain of the "drawing" feels palpable on the heavy Arches paper. Discoloration and paper color in print is intentional and part of the design.  Released in a limited edition of only 260 copies.
