About

Le Divian was originally created by Picasso during his formative retreat to Barcelona in 1899, otherwise known as his blue period.  While contemplating his art and social career in Paris, he set about the familiar city of Barcelona to find a new vision by exploring the various taverns, brothels, and cafe's of Barcelona's nightlife.  Ultimately, he came away with new experiences and developed a tone to his work that stylistically bridged the works of his Parisian colleagues, his earlier works of his childhood, his current developed style, and his newfound pessimistic view of society.

Picasso masterfully creates the image of a prostitute and her client from Charcoal, pastel, and colored pencils on paper.  Using earthy tones and a soft hand he creates a patina over the image, capturing the insinuated sexuality and disrepute of Barcelona's underbelly.

In 1963, Picasso collaborated with his longtime friend and secretary, Jaime Sabartés; the Museu Picasso, Barcelona; and the master print-makers, au Vent d'Arles, Paris to create a limited edition pochoir of the image.  Le Divian is one of 12 released that year in a special portfolio, Les Blues de Barcelona, to commemorate the opening of the Museu Picasso
