This image, titled "Wet Paint", originally painted as oil on canvas, appeared on the cover of The Saturday Evening Post, April 12, 1930. Featuring a young female artist running for cover, in a downpour, with her artist supplies hastily gathered under one arm with her incomplete landscape painting held tightly in the other hand.
Based on a real life encounter with a young artist while on a stroll in rural New York, Rockwell created this image as nod to a slice of American life and his own profession while showcasing his draughtsman technical ability, composition, and painterly abilities. "Wet Paint" is one of Rockwell's famous paintings within a painting, demonstrating the artist's range of styles.
Because Rockwell is recognized as perhaps the greatest American Illustrator, certainly the most well known, his original oil paintings are often unattainable. Towards the end of his life and career he recognized the demand for his works, creating limited edition lithographs of his most cherished works. Hand signed by Norman Rockwell himself and number in a limited edition of 200, this piece was printed in 1973.
