The Jimmy Page "Passport Photo," 1977
Captured by Neal Preston, this iconic portrait was take of Led Zeppelin's legendary guitarist, Jimmy Page, aboard the band's private plane "Caesar's Chariot." Dubbed the " Passport Photo" because of it's tightly cropped and centered framing against a clean white background, even without context the photo captures more than just Page's identity. His unblinking gaze gives a new perspective on the usually raucous showman, with an unusual unnerving stillness.
Despite Led Zeppelin being at the height of their excess and traveling in never-before seen luxury for a musical act, Page's expression suggests a weary, almost ghostly intensity rather than the "Guitar God's" normal public persona that most had come to expect. This photograph displays the skill that Neal Preston accomplishes in photojournalism when given truly unrestrained access.
