1959 Woodcut after Dalí from "Le Tricorne"

This compelling color woodcut, titled "Shades of the donkey", is a highlight from Salvador Dalí’s 1959 suite, Le Tricorne (The Three-Cornered Hat). Based on the celebrated novel by Pedro A. de Alarcón, the series serves as Dalí’s imaginative retelling of a story centered on an honest miller, his devoted wife, and a corrupt local official who abuses his power to pursue her. Dalí’s visual interpretations within this suite are masterfully diverse, oscillating between moments of delicate beauty and his signature surrealist morbidity.

To capture the intricate detail after Dalí’s original watercolors and collages, Editions Du Rocher, Monaco executed and published 20 wood engravings in a limited edition of only 260 copies. This rare set was printed on prestigious Richard de Bas Auvergne handmade paper, featuring a custom "Tricorne" watermark produced specifically for this suite.
