1984 Boston Celtics NBA Championship Ring — Larry Bird Style, Salesman Sample

In one of the greatest NBA Finals ever played, the Boston Celtics outlasted the Los Angeles Lakers in a grueling seven-game series to capture the franchise's 15th championship — reigniting the legendary Bird-Magic rivalry that defined the decade. This is an official salesman sample of the championship ring issued in the name of Finals MVP Larry Bird — produced on the exact same machines and dies as the player-issued original, made to near-exact specs, in 10k gold with cubic zirconia stones in place of diamonds.

What is a salesman sample?

Salesman samples were produced by the ring manufacturer on the exact same machines and dies as the player-issued originals — meaning the construction, detail, and craftsmanship are completely identical. The only difference is that samples use cubic zirconia (CZ) stones in place of diamonds. Everything else — the design, the gold, the engravings — is indistinguishable from the rings worn by the players themselves. Samples like this were used by sales reps to show teams future ring designs, and were never sold to the public. That makes them exceptionally rare today.

Boston entered the Finals off a league-best 62-20 regular season and needed every bit of that dominance to take down the Lakers. The series swung on costly Lakers mistakes like Magic Johnson's infamous clock-dribbling in Game 4 and James Worthy's Game 2 turnover. The series had no shortage of unforgettable events like Game 5's "Heat Game," played in 97-degree conditions at an air-conditioning-less Boston Garden, where Bird dropped 34 points and 17 rebounds. Bird closed the series averaging 27 points and 14 rebounds a game to claim Finals MVP honors.
