This is an 1862 first edition copy of The Bar-Tenders Guide by Jerry Thomas. This is the very first drink book in the English language, and much of today’s cocktail culture can be traced back to this book. Jerry “The Professor” Thomas was a barman in New York City and in the 1860’s was earning a $100 week behind the bar (equivalent to roughly $3,400/wk in 2022). He is widely regarded as the founding father of bartending & original cocktail showman, famed for the “Blue Blazer” a cocktail containing whiskey & boiling water that would be set on fire before being tossed back and forth between containers.
