1830s Belgian Percussion — .45 Caliber

This is a genuine 1830s Belgian percussion in .45 caliber measuring 16 3/4" in overall length, produced in Belgium during one of the most pivotal decades in the history of both European gunmaking and European politics. The percussion system had only recently displaced the flintlock as the dominant ignition technology.

The percussion revolution

The percussion ignition system, in which a small copper cap containing fulminate compound was struck by the hammer to ignite the powder charge, replaced the flintlock in the 1820s and 1830s as the dominant firearm technology in the Western world. The advantages were transformative: the percussion lock was faster, more reliable in wet weather, less susceptible to misfires, and simpler to operate than the flintlock it replaced. Gunsmiths across Europe raced to master the new system.

Nearly two centuries after it was made, this pistol connects its owner directly to the hand of a craftsman working at the dawn of the percussion age. For collectors of antique arms, European military history, or 19th century craftsmanship, this is an approachable entry into one of the most historically rich collecting categories in the world.

Antique firearm classification — important information for buyers

Under U.S. federal law (Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 921(a)(16)), any firearm manufactured on or before December 31, 1898 is classified as an antique firearm and is not considered a firearm under the Gun Control Act of 1968. As a genuine 1830s piece, this pistol qualifies as an antique — no FFL license, background check, or special transfer is required for purchase or possession in the United States. It may be legally shipped to most U.S. states and to many countries worldwide. Buyers outside the United States should consult their local laws prior to ordering, as international antique firearm regulations vary by country. This is sold as a collector's item and historical artifact. Any attempt to restore an antique firearm to operational condition is strongly discouraged and undertaken entirely at the buyer's risk. Cannot ship to NJ, NY, IL, OH, CA, HI and Washington DC. International customers: verifying this can be legally imported is your responsibility.
