This 1861 Penn. 1st Defense Medal is a once-in-a-lifetime find, honoring the brave soldier that received it. The medal is bronze and is marked on the obverse side as “The First Defenders,” and the middle of the medal reads “First in Defence of the Capital, April 18, 1861,” and features an etching of the U.S. Capital. The reverse is marked as being awarded to George Shartle of the “Ringgold Light Infantry.”

This medal was awarded to the "first defenders" five volunteer groups of troops who rushed to answer President Lincoln's call for militia in 1861 to confront the Confederates who fired on Ft. Sumter.
