Product Description

WWII Momsen Lung

  • Created by Charles Bowers Momsen along with Clarence Tibbals and Frank Hobson between June 1929 - September 1932
  • The Momsen Lung was an underwater rebreather used before and during World War II as emergency escape gear from submarines
  • See, Charles Momsen was in the US Navy when he first decided to invent this life saving device
  • On September 25, 1925, Momsen’s life would change forever. A submarine had an accident and Momsen was ordered to rescue the sinking ship!
  • Momsen and his crew found the sunken ship and tried to rescue it but without any sonar equipment, his ship couldn’t locate the bottom of the ocean to locate the ship. The crewmen inside the sunken ship died
  • It was at this time that Momsen first started to innovate new methods of how the US Navy could help rescue distressed submarine crewmen
  • After this incident, Momsen began working on the Momsen Lung also referred to as the Submarine Escape Lung
  • The Momsen Lung contained a canister of lime soda. The soda would remove the carbon dioxide from the exhaled air and replenished it with breathable oxygen
  • Two tubes were connected to the escape lung: one to inhale from, the second to exhale the used air
  • In 1929, Momsen received the Navy Distinguished Service Medal for personally testing the Momsen Lung at a depth of 200 ft
  • The only emergency use of the Momsen lung was during the escape from USS Tang on October 25, 1944
  • Momsen Lungs were used for almost 30 years until it was replaced in 1962
