  • This jacket once belonged to an US Army Air Force Fighter Jet Pilot that served bravely for this beautiful country we call home!
  • The unit from this soldier's jacket was called the Pioneer Mustang Group from the 354th Fighter Group in the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) during World War II
  • Activated on November 15th 1942 at Hamilton Army Airfield, CA. Pioneer Mustangs then transferred to Tonopah Army AirField in Nevada on January 1943 for a short time
  • They were the first to fly the P-51B Mustang in combat!
  • Deployed to Europe in November of 1943 to help fight the war while flying in their P-51B Mustang for most of the war!
  • Pioneer Mustang Group planes also flew to serve as escorts for air operations
  • The 354th was also used as escorts for long-range heavy bombers for the 8th Air Force Division
  • Major James H. Howard commander of the 356th Fighter Squadron received the Medal of Honor for single-handedly defending a formation of B-17 bombers of the 401st Bomb Group against 30 German fighters on January 11, 1944

  • Pioneer Mustang Group pilots supported the Normandy invasion in Jun 1944 by escorting gliders on D-Day. They also attacked ground targets such as bridges, railways, and German gun positions in northern France!
  • The 354th received a second Distinguished Unit Citation for destroying a large number of enemy aircraft on the ground an in the air in support of the airborne attack on Holland in September 1944
