The Alexandre Carathéodory Pasha Collection
This listing is for ONE (1) single coin randomly chosen from the Pasha Collection
"This ancient coin was once owned by the statesman Alexandre Carathéodory Pasha, one of the most accomplished figures of the 19th Century Ottoman Empire. He formed his collection of Greek and Roman coins late in the 19th Century, while in service of the Ottoman Sultan Abdul-Hamid II (1876-1909). The fact that Alexandre Carathéodory was a Greek makes his accomplishments in the Ottoman Empire all the more remarkable. Born in Constantinople, he hailed from the aristocratic Phanaroite family and began his career studying law in Paris. A long and distinguished career followed; he served the Ottoman Empire as a translator; ambassador to Rome, commissioner in Berlin, and twice as Governor-General of Crete. He was the only Greek ever to hold the exalted position of Ottoman Minister of Foreign Affairs. He appears to have acquired most of his ancient coins while reigning as Prince of the Island of Samos, from 1885 to 1894. This coin's identification and grade, as well as its pedigree to the Alexandre Carathéodory Pasha collection, have been confirmed by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation."
