Product Description

Autographed George Wharton Edwards "Constantinople"

George Wharton Edwards (1859-1950) was an American impressionist painter, illustrator and author. He was known for his picturesque
depictions of American and European scenes. Edwards was born in Fair Haven, CT in 1859. He grew up drawing things like barns, stone
wells, and wooden doghouses on makeshift canvases. In the early 1880s, he moved to France to study under academic pa intern Jacques-Eugène Feyen. He frequently traveled between European countries like Belgium, England, France and Italy to sketch and paint. His books are filled with descriptions and illustrations of architecture, towns and landscapes from his travels.
Constantinople, Istamboul was written and illustrated by George Wharton Edwards and published in 1930 by the Penn Publishing Company.
All of the illustrations were drawn or painted by Edwards in Constantinople in the fall of 1928. Edwards put this book together with the assistance of the Turkish Ambassador to the US. It contains 312 pages, 23 color plates, and 32 black & white plates depicting bazaars, coffee houses, palaces, mosques, cemeteries, fountains, Ankara, Mustafa Kemal Pasha, the emancipation of women, and the separation of church and state.
The hardcover is in dark green gilt cloth with silver, red and pale green, top edge gilt. Cover and interior pages are in good condition.
