Salvador Dali, Christ of St. John of the Cross
The very personal theme of the sculpture entwines the uplifting message of the Resurrection, Life Eternal through Christ, with Dali's realizations of his condition and advancing age. Dali's Boat of Salvation is shown below starting out to sea, sails beginning to unfurl.
Like Simon Peter, Dali too had a mission and a message but infirmities represented by the crutch that supports him dictate that he must now pass that mission on to the next generation represented by the child at his side.
Dali's dreams of glorious reward in the afterlife are conveyed in his striking portrayal of Christ freed from the Cross in a pose of victory crowned not with the thorns of Crucifixion but with the Halo of Resurrection.
Death is overcome, human suffering is past, Divine Reward for all eternity is ahead, light radiates in all directions.
This sculpture makes the most positive statement that can be made in summation of a life or career, a stirring monument of hope for all mankind.
