Ralph Albert Blakelock was an American artist (1847-1919) who was known mostly for his landscape paintings. His style can be described as romantic tonalism. After dropping out of college, Blakelock traveled alone through the American West. He interacted with American Indians and began filling notebooks with his experiences. Blakelock was a self-taught artist and he used his travel notes to produce landscapes and American Indian scenes.
During the late 1800's, Blakelock struggled to sell his art at a good price and he became depressed. His depression soon turned to mental fragility and he spent time in a psychiatric hospital. It was at this time that his work began to receive recognition. Works that he had struggled to sell were now selling for thousands of dollars. In 1916, one of his landscapes sold at auction for $20,000, which was a record sale for a living American artist. This created an opportunity for a woman who pretended to be a socialite, who then sought out Blakelock and had him released into her care. She was eventually took him for all he was worth. Blakelock continued to paint until his death in 1919.
