Sleeping Beauty is a 1959 animated film by Walt Disney Productions. It was Disney's 16th animated feature film. The film was based on a fairy tale by Charles Perrault and it would be the last adaptation of a fairy tale by the studio for almost thirty years until The Little Mermaid in 1989. Sleeping Beauty was met with a mixed critical reception and did not perform as well as Disney had hoped at the box office. The film has sustained a following over the years and it has been praised for its rich colors, sound, and special elements, such as the sparkling wand. Also, due to the stylized designs by painter Eyvind Earle the film has been lauded as one of the best animated films ever made.
