Janis Joplin was born on 1943 in Port Arthur, TX and the lead singer in the band, Big Brother. The band created a smashing successful album called Cheap Thrills in 1968 that became certified gold by the Billboard Charts. Big Brother became famous due to Joplin's strong vocals. After Janis Joplin decided to leave Big Brother in 1968 to become a solo act she also performed at Woodstock that same year! Joplin died in 1970 of a drug overdose at the age of 27. Joplin was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, and posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement awards at the Grammy's in 2005.
Day of arrest:
On November 16, 1969, Janis Joplin performed a solo concert at Curtis Hixon Hall in Tampa, FL. Tampa Police had been ordering people attending the concert to sit down however people failed to follow their orders. Police then ordered Janis Joplin to instruct the crowd to sit down but Joplin refused and began cursing at the officers. After the concert was over, Tampa Police arrested Joplin in her dressing room and charged her with "vulgar and obscene language." Joplin spent an hour behind bars and paid a $504 bond to be released. Charges against Joplin were later dropped after it was ruled that she was exercising her right to free speech and a $200 fine to close out the case.
