Basil II (976-1025) and his brother and co-emperor, Constantine VIII (962-1028) ruled during a new height of Byzantine power. Basil was an effective administrator and general. 

Folles were stuck beginning in the 10th century. A portrait of Jesus Christ replaced the emperor. On the reverse, an inscription acknowledging his power appeared: + IhSuS / XRISTuS / bASILEu / bASILE: Jesus Christ, King of Kings. 

Christ had appeared on Byzantine coinage before, but these folles mark the first time his portrait had appeared on bronze coins.
