About

Manuel Robbe was a French artist who lived his entire life in Paris. He was a master of aquatint color and his work in this medium is characterized by stylish figures accented with splashes of pastel. A favorite subject of Robbe was the modern woman including her costumes and activities. Robbe was influence by the Impressionists, in particular Renoir. He designed and printed posters after seeing the artistic potential of the new commercial era. Additionally, he created illustrations for magazines. An innovative artist, Robbe created his own engraving technique known as "sugar-life," which mixed sugar, India ink and gum Arabic on Zinc plates.
