German Pop Up Playhouse Book - Das Puppenhaus
For sale is a beautiful Gold edition of Das Puppenhaus (The Doll's House) pop-up book written and illustrated by German writer Lother Meggendorfer in 1890. The book is in good condition for its age and is housed in the original slipcase that includes publisher's
printed paper label. A fine example of German printing from the late 19th century.
The book opens to form five delightful scenes, they include: a family with a gypsy cart, the interior of a grocery store, a family in a drawing room with a child playing the piano, a mother and child in a kitchen, and the backyard of a home.
The book was immensely popular, and thus Das Puppenhaus was issued over the decades with changes to reflect the times. For instance, the gypsy cart in this edition is replaced by a motor vehicle in the version from the 1910s. The book is an example of the popularity of paper dolls and paper doll houses from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. Technological advances allowed for mass production in the 19th century, which drastically lowered the cost of printing. That in turn made reproducing pictures much easier, leading to an explosion of illustrated paper dolls and books.
Book measures 10”x 8”.
