Georges Braque was a 20th century French painter who is best known for inventing cubism with Pablo Picasso. He started his career with an Impressionistic painting style, transitioning to a Fauvist style around 1905 after seeing exhibitions by the Fauves. A model, who later because Braque’s wife, introduced him to Picasso; from 1909 to 1914 the two collaborated to develop what is known as Cubism, as well as using papier collé (pasted paper) in their pieces. After WWI, Georges’ style became a bit less structured, gaining him much acclaim, later designing décor for two ballets. The end of the 1920’s showed another shift, as Braque began painting realistic interpretations of nature before starting to engrave plaster in 1931, which also brought accreditations. Pieces by this artist also include lithographs, sculptures and stained glass windows. Braque died in August, 1963 in Paris.
