Felix de Weldon was an Austrian-born American sculptor. He is best known for sculpting the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington, VA and the Malaysian National Monument in Kuala Lumpur. De Weldon was first noticed at age 17 for his sculpting talent. He completed his education in Austria and then began travelling for sculpting commissions around the world. In 1937, de Weldon settled in the U.S. where he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during WWII. Honorably, de Weldon was appointed to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts by three different presidents.

In 1945, the Congress of the U.S. commissioned de Weldon to construct the Iwo Jima Memorial. It was to be constructed in the realist tradition and was based on the famous photograph of Joe Rosenthal of the Associated Press. The memorial took nine years to complete and was dedicated on November 10, 1954. Hundreds of sculptors assisted de Weldon in the project. The 100-ton bronze statue is on display in Arlington, VA.
