The guitarrón Mexicano is a large, deep-bodied Mexican six-string acoustic bass played traditionally in Mariachi groups. Although comparative to the guitar, it isn't a subordinate of that instrument, but was freely created from the sixteenth-century Spanish Bajo de uña. Since its great size gives it volume, it does not require electric enhancement for performances in small venues.
