This is Dover Manufacturing Company’s small “Asbestos” nickel-plated sad iron stamped PAT. MAY 22, 1900 on the top. Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral composed of delicate, adaptable filaments that are heat-resistant. A lean asbestos liner, connected inside the hood of these irons, served to contain warmth inside the strong base, keeping it hot longer. 

Caution: This product at one point contained asbestos. The liner has since been removed and is not included with the iron.
