Located in present day central Turkey, the Cappadocian Kingdom arose in the Hellenistic period. Throughout the Cappadocian Kingdom’s history, the kingdom was ruled by three families. The familied, in order were: Ariarathese (331-96 B.C.), Ariobarzanes and Archelaus. The Kingdom was almost dissolved by the Kingdom of Potnus in the early first century B.C. before Rome supported Cappadocia’s independence, which led to the House of Ariobarzanes. After this encounter, Rome continued to assert their preference into political matters of the Kingdom, before making the area a Roman province in 17 A.D.
