Albrecht Durer was a German (1471-1528) draftsman, painter, and writer. He is best known for his intricate woodcuts, engravings, and etchings. Durer displayed a natural talent for fine art and his drawing ability which led to an apprenticeship with a successful artist in Nuremberg when he was just 15. Traveling extensively helped shape his style as an artist. During these travels, he would study the art and culture of the regions he was visiting. Italy most impressed him. His works became highly popular near the end of the 1400's. Durer was chosen as the official court artist for the Roman Emperors Maximilian I and Charles V beginning in 1518. Albrecht Durer's works are exhibited in collections around the world.
